TopCity Swing is a weekend-long celebration of swing dancing and music, with social and musical events and over 8 hours of dance instruction. Join us for all or part of the festivities!

EVENT SCHEDULE

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27

  • 7 p.m. - Welcome Dance at the Vinewood with The Jasper Shrake Quartet (Tickets available for $10 at the door)

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28

  • 10 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. - 5 hours of dance classes with a break for lunch

  • 5:00 - 5:30 - Mix n' Match competition Prelims

  • 7 p.m. - Battle of the Big Bands with 785 Big Band and Radio Days Orchestra at the Jayhawk Theatre, Mix n' Match competition Finals at 9:15. (Purchase tickets in advance here for $16 or for $20 at the door.)

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 29

  • 10 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. - Jazz Brunch at Juli's Coffee & Bistro

  • 12:00 - 3:30 p.m. - Dance classes 

  • 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. - Swing Dance Flashmob in the NOTO Arts & Entertainment district (weather permitting)

VENUES

Friday dance will be held at The Vinewood (2848 SE 29th Street)

Saturday Intermediate classes will be held in the Florentine Room at Jayhawk Tower

Saturday Beginning classes will be held in the back room of Juli's Coffee and Bistro (110 SE 8th Avenue)

Saturday Battle of the Big Bands will be held at the Jayhawk Theatre (720 SW Jackson Street)

Sunday Jazz brunch and classes will be held at Juli's Coffee and Bistro (110 SE 8th Avenue)

Sunday Swing Dance Flashmob will be in the NOTO Arts & Entertainment district, in a green space just north of Norsemen Brewing

INSTRUCTORS

Beginner Track

Amanda Bernice specializes in Lindy Hop and vintage vernacular jazz dance, Charleston and Balboa. She has founded 627 Stomp and The Kansas City Canaries.

Ben Todd is all about building the aspects of the dance community that first won him over in 2013: Great friends, great dances, and fantastic jazz music.

Intermediate Lindy Hop Track

Heather Ballew holds titles

from numerous competitions, including International Lindy Hop Championships.

Krister Shalm runs a dance school in Boulder, CO, but occasionally he gets distracted by his day job as an experimental quantum physicist. 

HOUSING

Some limited housing will be available for out-of-town attendees on a first-come, first-served basis. For questions regarding housing please email topcityswing@gmail.com

To request housing, please fill out the Housing Request Form. The deadline for housing requests is Sunday, September 15.

If you are local to the Topeka or Lawrence area and would like to host out-of-town dancers, please fill out the Host Form as soon as possible.
